Healing Headaches and Migraines with Acupuncture

By Sarah Hayes, LAc, Acupuncture Northwest Portland

Headaches and migraines are one of the most common symptoms that we see in our clinic.

Oftentimes, people visit many practitioners, try numerous drugs and medications, or deal with migraines or headaches for years on end with no end in sight. We look at migraines and headaches in a completely unique way. We’ve found that the pain commonly stems from muscle imbalances or tightness in the neck and shoulders. Muscle tension in the neck and shoulders refers pain to in the temples, front of the head, eyes, and top of the head.

We do a specific style of acupuncture called trigger point to get into those muscles and get them to let go. Frequently, this stops the pattern of pulling on the base of the occiput and causing pain to the top or front of the head. It’s a surprisingly quick fix once somebody starts treating their headaches or migraines with acupuncture. We’ve found that roughly 97% of people experience a significant degree of relief if not a total resolution of symptoms.
